How It Is Implanted
Swallowing the Capsule
The Allurion Gastric Balloon is encapsulated in a small, swallowable capsule attached to a thin catheter. Under the guidance of a healthcare professional, the patient swallows the capsule with a glass of water.
Balloon Inflation
Once the capsule reaches the stomach, an X-ray is performed to ensure correct placement. The balloon is then filled with approximately 550ml of saline solution through the catheter. Another X-ray confirms the balloon is properly inflated.
Catheter Removal
After the balloon is inflated, the catheter is gently removed, leaving the balloon in the stomach. The entire procedure typically takes about 20 minutes and does not require sedation or endoscopy.
Duration in the Stomach
The Allurion Gastric Balloon remains in the stomach for approximately 16 weeks. During this period, patients follow a medically supervised diet and exercise program to maximize weight loss.
Natural Excretion
After about 16 weeks, the balloon deflates on its own and is naturally excreted from the body through the digestive system, eliminating the need for a removal procedure.
